FGF: Goals & Standards

FGF: Goals & Standards

Hey Team FITLV!

Happy Feel Good Friday team!! I can't believe we are already wrapping up September. This month has FLOWN by!!! I want to start off this morning by practicing what I preach and sharing three things I am grateful for:

1- I am grateful for the cooler mornings with the doors open-the fresh air🍂

2- I am grateful for the business masterminds I have been attending that facilitate personal and business growth.

3- I am grateful for this platform that allows me to share motivation and my thoughts with you all weekly.

As always, thanks for being here. ❤️

Today's FGF is going to take a deep dive into setting your goals and a big reason people won't ever reach them.

But Kristi... that's not positive?!

Well hang on now, let's look at the problem and SOLVE IT!!!

Often times, people set goals but they don't set the standards in place that need to accompany these goals. They set goals but don't fully understand their WHY behind the goals. Or maybe they set goals but they haven't taken the time to really visualize what life would look like when they achieve them. So let's break it down.

What's your WHY?

You most likely have heard me talk about your WHY when it comes to accomplishing goals. For most people the response starts out on a surface level. For instance:

"I want to lose weight."

Why do you want to lose weight?

"So I can wear a bikini on the beach confidently."

Why do you want to wear a bikini confidently?

"Because we are taking a family vacation to the beach!"

So....

"So my daughters will be there and I don't want them to see my hiding my body anymore."

What sort of impact do you think that would have on them?

"They might grow up feeling shameful of their bodies too and I would never want them to feel that way."

SURFACE: Lose weight to wear bikini

WHY: To raise confident and proud little girls who don't feel body shame.

See how a few layers of questions got to a deeper meaning behind the goal? You can do this exercise with any goal you have set. You may uncover some truths about yourself in the process. I recommend sitting down with a notepad and writing out your goals, you will know when you got to your WHY when it evokes emotion in you. "If it makes you want to cry, you have discovered your why."

Visualize

Another key in achieving your goals is visualization. When you truly visualize the accomplishment, it conditions your your brain to see, hear, and feel the success in your mind.

"A study looking at brain patterns in weightlifters found that the patterns activated when a weightlifter lifted hundreds of pounds were similarly activated when they only imagined lifting. Research has revealed that mental practices are almost effective as true physical practice." -Angie LeVan

Woah.

Take your goal and visualize how it would FEEL when you're there. If we are using the example above, close your eyes and see yourself on the beach radiating confidence with your family. Feeling good about yourself and proud for achieving what you set out to do. See your little girls eyes looking at you, see their smile beaming. How do you feel?

Now visualize yourself in a few months having not achieved your goal. You are on the same vacation but you never followed through. How do you feel?

REALLY FEEL IT. A huge part of success is feeling it before you achieve it.

Set your Standards

Goals without standards are just thoughts. In order to have the best possible chance of achieving your goals, you have to adjust your standards. Ed Mylett explains, standards are the performance benchmarks you're willing to tolerate in order to achieve your goals. They are the actions that propel you towards your goals. Example:

-When you can no longer tolerate the way your clothes are fitting, you will make a change.

-When you can no longer tolerate wanting to avoid intimacy with your spouse because you are not confident naked, you will make a change.

-When you can no longer tolerate feeling winded walking up and down the stairs you will make a change.

We all have a certain level of what we can tolerate. That is our standard. If you are willing to tolerate all of the above, the goal of change/weight loss is irrelevant. It is only when you decide I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!! That you change.

For me, I knew I needed business systems for a long time. I got by using scratch paper, google sheets, highlighters, dry erase boards, and 5,000 notepads. I eventually grew to the point that I could not take it any more, I wanted to rip my hair out. I HAD to make a change in order to achieve my business goals. I raised my standards.

Maintaining your standards

  • Set your why
  • Get specific with your action steps
  • Get accountability
  • Stay organized
  • Give yourself grace
  • Enjoy the process

I hope todays #FGF has you thinking a bit deeper or differently about the goals you have set for yourself. I know the above practices have been a game changer for me learning about myself, my deeper WHYs for doing what I do, and also helping me achieve my own goals. I will never advise practices I haven't applied to my own life.

As always, thanks for being here. Thanks for giving me a platform to share my thoughts each week and encouraging me to do so. I appreciate YOU! If you enjoyed this email, please send me a note back. I love connecting with you all!
